The Swedish authority publishes recommendations on live streaming of sports for children and young people
The Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) has published guidelines on the live streaming of sporting events involving children and young people, to clarify the rules applicable under the GDPR.
These guidelines remind that while streaming can generate revenue for sports associations and allow relatives to follow events, the interest of children in terms of privacy is paramount. IMY emphasizes that social pressure, especially in team sports, can make it difficult for children or legal guardians to refuse, thus invalidating any possible consent. To assess the legality of streaming, a balancing of interests must be carried out taking into account the age of the children, the audience, the level of competition, the clothing worn, and whether the recording is retained. For young adolescents and children, privacy protection generally prevails. The guidelines also address the allocation of responsibilities, for example between a municipality owning a facility and a club installing cameras there.
