The National Data Protection Inspectorate (DVI) of Latvia has published clarifications on the scope of real estate information of parliamentary candidates that must be made public.

The Latvian electoral law requires candidates to declare their real estate assets to ensure transparency in the electoral process. The Central Election Commission (CVK), as the data controller, should not automatically publish all submitted information, notably the precise address of a property. The authority reminds that publication must comply with the data minimization principle, in accordance with Article 5, paragraph 1, point c of the GDPR, as well as data protection by design and by default provided in Article 25, paragraph 2. Consequently, disclosing general information, such as the type of property and its city or locality, is sufficient to inform the public, making the publication of the full address unnecessary.
