The Polish data protection authority (UODO) warns about privacy risks related to the use of smart glasses.

The authority recalls that recording images and sounds by these devices constitutes processing of personal data as soon as it is not within a purely personal or domestic context, thus engaging the user's responsibility under the GDPR. The main identified risks are recording people without their knowledge, the feeling of continuous surveillance, the possibility of data transfer to third countries not offering an adequate level of protection, as well as the unlawful publication of recordings or their analysis by artificial intelligence tools. A study by the National Commission on Informatics and Liberties (CNIL) is cited, indicating that 67% of respondents perceive this risk.

For compliant use, the UODO recommends several best practices. It is advised to familiarize oneself with the device's data processing conditions, configure privacy settings, and disable recording functions when not in use. The authority emphasizes the need to inform people nearby of the recording, obtain their consent before any dissemination, and not to use these devices in places requiring a high degree of confidentiality such as medical offices or schools. Finally, it is advised to delete recordings that have become unnecessary.
