Paul Arnold's Opening Speech at DPPC 2026 Highlights the Importance of Partnership for Responsible Innovation
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) set out its vision and strategic priorities during the opening speech of the Data Protection Practitioners Conference 2026.
The Director General emphasized the importance of partnership with professionals to address new technological risks, within the framework of the newly established "Information Commission." He stated that privacy protection and responsible innovation are interdependent and essential to maintaining public trust. The ICO is committed to supporting organisations through a proportionate and transparent approach, providing tools such as the "Data Protection Essentials" for small entities and conducting consultations, notably on agentic AI towards a future code of good practice. The authority will use its sanctioning powers against criminal, negligent, or irresponsible practices, while remaining open to dialogue with stakeholders.
