The Outlier platform illegally monitors European platform workers according to noyb

The association `noyb` (European Digital Rights Network), in collaboration with several partners, has filed five complaints in France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Austria against the American company Scale AI, accused of illegal monitoring of workers on its artificial intelligence training platform, Outlier.

The company Scale AI, which employs more than 900,000 independent workers on its Outlier platform to train artificial intelligence systems for clients such as Meta, OpenAI, or Google, is accused of several breaches. The complaints denounce the installation of trackers on workers' devices, originating from third-party companies like TikTok, LinkedIn, and Facebook, which transmit personal data every few seconds. Furthermore, workers are allegedly forced to undergo repeated biometric verification via the company Persona, including video recordings of their faces and uploading identity documents.

According to `noyb`, these practices are conducted without a valid legal basis for installing the trackers and violate the data minimization principle. The processing of biometric data is also considered excessive and illegal. Scale AI is also reproached for not responding to the complainants' access requests, thus violating their right of access provided by the GDPR. The association calls on data protection authorities to investigate these violations and impose an administrative fine.
