The Korean authority organizes a national debate on the secure use of personal data in the era of artificial intelligence
The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) of South Korea and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety organized a public forum to discuss the protection and use of personal data in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).
This third "Forum for All," held on November 1 at Yonsei University, brought together about 200 citizens as well as presidential secretaries for future AI strategy and public engagement. The goal was to gather public opinion on balancing personal data protection with its secure use for innovative and public interest services. The event combined expert presentations, discussion workshops, and a debate, and shared the results of a prior online consultation that gathered 1,200 participants.
The debates focused on the current legal framework for data processing and conflicts between AI requirements and regulation. Three main discussion axes were addressed: the new value created by personal data, the potential transition from a prior consent model to a notification system with the right to object, and the sharing of responsibilities among companies, government, and citizens to build a trust framework. The authorities reaffirmed their willingness to reform legislation to enable secure data use, thus fostering innovation while ensuring public trust.
