The Korean authority allocates a budget of 99.6 billion won for 2027 focused on prevention and secure innovation in personal data
The South Korean Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) has presented its draft budget for 2027, amounting to 99,600,000,000 won (approximately €66,400,000), with particular attention to prevention and the regulation of transformation by artificial intelligence (AI).
This budget, an increase of 37% compared to the 72,900,000,000 won (approximately €48,600,000) of the previous year, focuses on several strategic axes. An allocation of 7,300,000,000 won (approximately €4,870,000) is dedicated to the dissemination of prevention systems, including 4,300,000,000 won (approximately €2,870,000) for a new preventive control mechanism. Furthermore, 2,200,000,000 won (approximately €1,470,000) are allocated to the secure use of AI, to promote international data transfers and to enable the use of personal data for AI development with specific safeguards. Finally, 9,700,000,000 won (approximately €6,470,000) will support the right to data portability to develop a secure "MyData" ecosystem and strengthen individuals' control over their information, notably through the creation of a "National MyData Forum".
Several other budget items are planned to strengthen data protection. Incident response and security will benefit from funds for breach prevention (8,000,000,000 won, approximately €5,330,000), support for the Commission's litigation (1,600,000,000 won, approximately €1,070,000), and assistance for investigations (600,000,000 won, approximately €400,000). Research and development will receive significant investments, notably for advanced technologies in the secure use of data (8,200,000,000 won, approximately €5,470,000) and specialist training (4,000,000,000 won, approximately €2,670,000). A fund of 15,800,000,000 won (approximately €10,530,000) is also created to improve citizens' rights, including rewards for reporting data breaches (9,400,000,000 won, approximately €6,270,000) and a pilot project to assist in damage repair (1,300,000,000 won, approximately €870,000).
