The Korean authority awards the 3rd 'Personal Data Whale' prize to recognize outstanding achievements
The Personal Information Protection Commission of South Korea (PIPC) has rewarded one officer and two teams for their notable contributions to data protection as part of the third edition of the "Personal Data Whale Awards".
These awards, accompanied by a total prize of 6,000,000 won (approximately €4,000), aim to encourage commission officers whose exceptional efforts have resolved major issues or innovated. The winners of this third edition were recognized for their work on strengthening data protection staffing in the public sector, managing current political challenges, and overhauling the administrative fines and prevention incentive system.
The "Human Resources and Budget Team" was awarded for conducting the first analysis of staffing and budgets allocated to data protection in the public sector. They established minimum personnel criteria based on the importance of processing systems and, after consultation with the relevant ministries, secured the creation of 54 data protection positions within central administrative agencies.
The "Planning Team" was rewarded for overseeing the commission's work plans and systematically monitoring key cases. The team also contributed to strengthening the authority's policy capabilities by proactively identifying essential strategic directions, notably related to the era of artificial intelligence.
An officer from the "Investigation Supervision Division" was distinguished for leading a reform of the sanctions regime. This initiative shifted from a sanction-focused system to a model promoting prevention and rapid recovery. An incentive mechanism was created to reduce fines based on companies' preventive investments and remediation efforts, while criteria for increasing penalties for repeated or serious violations were established to enhance sanction rigor.
