The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) of South Korea has announced the establishment of the assessment committee for the year 2026, tasked with reviewing the level of data protection within public bodies.

This program aims to comprehensively diagnose the data protection capabilities of public bodies and encourage the improvement of weaknesses. For 2026, the assessment will cover a total of 1,458 entities, including central administrative agencies, local governments, and public enterprises. The procedure combines a self-assessment by the bodies themselves and an in-depth evaluation conducted by the external expert committee. The latter, whose appointment was formalized on August 24, 2026, is composed of 100 specialists from academic, legal, and industrial backgrounds. Their tasks will include on-site inspections, scoring of results, and identification of best practices. According to a PIPC representative, this approach aims to continuously raise the level of data protection in the public sector.
