The South Korean data protection authority, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), held a meeting of the "Forum on the Future of Personal Information 2026" to discuss the evolution of the regime for transfers of personal data abroad.

The fourth plenary meeting of the forum, held on 17 September 2026, addressed compliance challenges faced by data controllers and compared the national system to the GDPR. In light of the increase in data flows related to artificial intelligence, participants acknowledged the need to expand secure transfer mechanisms, such as standard contractual clauses (SCCs) and binding corporate rules (BCRs), to support international research and global economic activities. The chairperson of the PIPC emphasized the importance of protecting individuals' rights while facilitating data use and announced the development of policies aimed at removing unnecessary barriers to innovation.
