The Icelandic authority investigates complaints related to data processing before the August 29, 2026 referendum
The Icelandic Data Protection Authority (Persónuvernd) has initiated investigations following complaints concerning the processing of personal data in the context of the August 29, 2026 referendum.
The authority received 54 reports and complaints related to unsolicited communications and the processing of personal data prior to the August 29, 2026 referendum on resuming Iceland's EU accession negotiations. Cases concerning unsolicited communications and a possible breach of Act No. 77/2022 on telecommunications were forwarded to the Telecommunications Agency, pursuant to paragraph 2 of Article 7 of Act No. 37/1993 on administrative procedure. At the same time, the authority launched ex officio investigations into the processing of personal data by all political parties represented in Parliament (Alþingi) as well as by the organizations "Yes 2026 (SJÁ)" and "Forward Iceland."
