The Hungarian National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH) announces the expansion of transparency obligations related to public funds following a legislative amendment.

A law dated June 26, 2026, amending the Freedom of Information Act, extends from August 26, 2026, the scope of organizations and data subject to a publication obligation on the Central Register of Public Data Information. This obligation now concerns more detailed information on contracts, subsidies, and payments exceeding 5 million forints. Newly subject entities include public commercial companies, certain public interest foundations, as well as the Hungarian Research Network HUN-REN. The first publication for these new entities and for the expanded data scope is set for October 28, 2026, with a bi-monthly reporting frequency.

The authority specifies that since March 1, 2023, it has conducted 488 control procedures regarding transparency, thus making the use of more than 487 billion forints of public funds (approximately €1.2 billion) more traceable. The NAIH announces it will pay particular attention to compliance with these new obligations by the newly concerned entities and to the publication of data within the expanded scope.
