The Greek authority designated as the lead authority for the enforcement of the Artificial Intelligence Regulation in Greece
The Hellenic Data Protection Authority has been designated as the lead authority in Greece for the enforcement of the Artificial Intelligence Regulation.
Under Law 5321/2026 transposing Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 on Artificial Intelligence, the authority is designated as the market surveillance authority for prohibited AI systems, high-risk systems listed in Annex III, and those subject to the transparency obligations of Article 50. Its powers also include acting as the single point of contact for Greece, managing complaints related to infringements of the regulation, and serving as a notified body for the conformity assessment of certain high-risk systems. It is also jointly responsible, with the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT), for the operation of the national regulatory sandbox for AI.
The provisions of the regulation concerning prohibited artificial intelligence practices have been applicable since 2 February 2026. The transparency obligations set out in Article 50 of the same regulation came into force on 2 August 2026. The Special Secretariat for Artificial Intelligence and Data Governance has published additional information on these transparency obligations.
