The European Commission welcomes the design of the first Important Project of Common European Interest in artificial intelligence

The European Commission has welcomed the design of the first Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) dedicated to artificial intelligence.

Jointly designed by 19 Member States and coordinated by Germany, this project aims to develop a range of decentralized and accessible AI services, as well as innovative industrial technologies and products. The objective is to strengthen Europe's digital sovereignty and its position as a leader in AI innovation, in line with the AI continent Action Plan, the Apply AI Strategy, and the proposal for the cloud and AI development law. The Commission facilitated this approach through its IPCEI Design Support Hub, established in April 2025, to assist Member States in preparing state aid notifications compliant with EU rules for accelerated processing. Eleven involved Member States will begin pre-notifying their projects to the Commission in September 2026, which will assess their compliance with the criteria of the Communication on IPCEIs.
