The European Commission encourages the EU Code Week community to explore, imagine, and have fun in the era of artificial intelligence

The European Commission announced the launch of the 14th edition of EU Code Week, highlighting the importance of digital literacy and computational thinking in the context of artificial intelligence.

During the event on October 12, the Executive Vice-President emphasized the growing use of generative AI, used by 33% of Europeans and 64% of young people aged 16 to 24. The initiative aims to introduce young people to safe and responsible use of technology, in line with EU priorities such as the Digital Decade Action Plan. The President of the European Parliament encouraged young people to participate in shaping Europe's digital future, with the initiative targeting 25 million students.

The Deputy Director-General of DG CONNECT recalled the Commission's efforts for responsible AI development, citing initiatives such as the Digital Education Action Plan, the AI Act, the European strategy for a better internet for children (BIK+), and the upcoming European Child Guarantee. She stressed the essential role of teachers, educators, and local communities in translating European digital ambitions into classrooms.
