European authorities publish a study on value creation in finance through data protection
The French Data Protection Authority (CNIL), the Luxembourg National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD), and the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) have published a joint study on data valuation in the financial sector and associated best practices.
Titled "From data protection to value creation in finance: data valuation, accounting, mergers and acquisitions, and governance," this report presents GDPR compliance as a strategic asset that strengthens the trust of customers, partners, and investors. This trust supports data valuation and their ability to generate future profits. Conversely, poor risk management related to data or non-compliance can negatively affect the economic value of an asset by introducing reputational, financial, and operational risks.
The study provides best practices to integrate these issues into financial operations, notably during mergers and acquisitions and due diligence procedures, where they can influence asset valuation and transaction pricing. It also addresses the accounting of data as intangible assets according to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and emphasizes the importance of data protection as a prerequisite for deploying artificial intelligence systems. The methodology is based on quantitative analyses, qualitative interviews, and a statistical survey conducted in France and Luxembourg.
