The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has published its opinion 19/2026 on the European Commission's proposal to modernize the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust).

This proposed regulation, part of a broader "Justice and Home Affairs" (JHA) legislative package, aims to replace Regulation (EU) 2018/1727 to improve Eurojust's functioning and extend its mandate to new crime areas. The EDPS welcomes the streamlining of operational data protection rules, the principle of centralized processing within the Case Management System (CMS), and the use of secure communication channels. However, the opinion makes several recommendations to ensure an adequate level of protection, notably concerning the CMS, data matching, the determination of roles and responsibilities, the opt-in/opt-out consultation system, information security, operational data transfers to third countries, and the validity of existing cooperation agreements.
