DVI: How to Protect Personal Data When Playing Online Video Games

The Latvian Data Protection Authority (DVI) has published recommendations aimed at protecting children's personal data in the context of online video games.

The authority recommends the use of pseudonyms and dedicated email addresses that do not reveal real identity when registering on gaming platforms. It reminds that a pseudonym can constitute personal data, according to Article 4 of the GDPR, if it allows identification of a person. The DVI warns that the combination of several pieces of information shared during conversations, even trivial ones, can enable identification. It is therefore advised not to disclose contact details, passwords, and to be cautious about background conversations captured by microphones. The authority also emphasizes that deleting a message does not guarantee its complete disappearance, as it can be copied. The DVI stresses the importance of parental dialogue to raise children's awareness of risks, while specifying that it does not monitor exchanges between players and that platform reporting tools should be used.
