The European Commission has registered a European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) entitled "Creation of a European digital space (.AI) for sovereign governance of AI".

The organizers of this initiative invite the Commission to propose a framework for "high-trust digital spaces" and testing environments for ethical AI. They also request the opening of negotiations with ISO and ICANN for the reservation and protection of the .AI domain name, which should integrate sovereign digital identity (eIDAS 2.0), the transparent algorithmic audit provided for by the AI Act, as well as the personal data protection guaranteed by the GDPR. The Commission considered the initiative legally admissible as it meets the required formal conditions, specifying that this step does not commit its final decision on the substance. For the Commission to be obliged to respond, the organizers must now collect at least 1,000,000 valid statements of support from at least seven Member States.
