The British authority inaugurates its new headquarters in Manchester and transitions to collegiate governance

The British data protection authority, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), has announced its official transition to a new governance structure called the Information Commission.

This transformation, provided for by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, changes the authority from a single-person led entity to a collegiate decision-making body. The ICO's activities are now overseen by a new Board of the Information Commission, whose non-executive members have taken office. A deputy chair has been appointed to serve in the interim pending the appointment of a permanent chair by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) by spring 2027. This reorganization, coinciding with the opening of a new headquarters in Manchester, does not affect the authority's core responsibilities.

The Information Commission is preparing a new corporate strategy focused on priority areas such as artificial intelligence, cyber resilience, children's privacy, and public services. It is specified that although the legal entity is the Information Commission, the organization will continue to be publicly known as the Information Commissioner's Office or by its acronym ICO.
