The UK authority publishes a report on public perceptions of biometric technologies, artificial intelligence, and privacy protection
The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has published a series of reports and research on public perceptions and issues related to new technologies.
A joint report with Nesta's Centre for Collective Intelligence (CCI), funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and the Regulatory Innovation Office, presents the findings of a citizens' jury on their perceptions of neurotechnology and neurodata. This work explores potential applications, from medical treatments to future consumer products, and public expectations in this area.
Another research, combining a national survey and focus groups, was conducted to assess the perception, experience, and awareness of the British public regarding biometric technologies.
The ICO commissioned a study on public perception of the use of automated decision-making in recruitment processes. The aim was to better understand the public's experiences, concerns, and expectations in the face of technological evolution in this sector.
A report summarizes the findings of a workshop held on 20 February 2024 on privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs). The event aimed to identify barriers to their adoption by providers and users, as well as to propose solutions to encourage their responsible deployment.
A citizens' jury, organized by Impact Research, explored public expectations regarding consumer Internet of Things (IoT) products, such as activity trackers or smart speakers. In collaboration with the Alan Turing Institute, the ExplAIn project was the subject of an interim report aiming to create a practical guide on explaining decisions based on artificial intelligence (AI). The findings highlight the importance of context, the need for public education, and challenges related to cost and innovation, suggesting there is no one-size-fits-all approach and emphasizing the need for leadership-level involvement.
Finally, the ICO published a report on advertising technologies (adtech), summarizing an inquiry forum held on 6 March 2019. This work is part of a real-time bidding (RTB) review launched in February 2019, due to the complexity, scale, and risks this system poses to individuals' rights.
