The UK authority conducts raids following millions of complaints about abusive car finance marketing
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) conducted raids in the UK as part of an investigation into unsolicited marketing related to claims for abusive car finance sales.
On 29 July 2026, the ICO, in collaboration with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), and the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), executed search warrants at several residential and commercial premises. These actions, carried out in Bolton, Burnley, Liverpool, London, and Swansea, target five companies suspected of sending 170 million text messages between September 2025 and May 2026. This intervention follows over 12 million public complaints regarding unsolicited marketing. The ICO reminds claims management sector companies of their obligation to comply with the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).
Meanwhile, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has removed or amended more than 1,220 misleading advertisements since January 2024. It has also reached voluntary agreements with twelve companies to cease or modify their marketing activities. These measures have enabled over 28,000 consumers to terminate their contracts without fees and three claims management companies to reduce their fees, affecting more than 500,000 consumers. Two enforcement investigations are ongoing against The Claims Protection Agency Limited and Consultation Claims Limited.
