Two Renovation Companies Fined £370,000 for Abusive Phone Calls Targeting Vulnerable People in the UK
The British data protection authority (ICO) has imposed fines totaling £370,000 (approximately €436,600) on two home renovation companies for making hundreds of thousands of illegal cold calls. Both companies, run by the same individual, were also issued injunctions ordering them to cease all marketing calls without consent. The calls notably targeted vulnerable individuals who had requested not to be contacted.
Thermotech Wall and Loft Surveys Ltd (TWLS) was fined £240,000 (approximately €283,200). Over six months, it made 575,000 calls to numbers registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), a do-not-call list. The company used automated calling software with pre-recorded scripts to deceive recipients. The investigation uncovered messages in which the director encouraged the use of do-not-call lists and planned to create a new entity to continue operations in case of complaints.
Jacksons Marketing Ltd (JML) was fined £130,000 (approximately €153,400) for making over 230,000 illegal calls over eleven months. JML's telemarketers used deceptive tactics, claiming that home insulation could be dangerous to the health of contacted individuals or that their contact details came from government sources, which was false.
