South Korean authorities, under the aegis of the Commission of Communications and Media, have formalized the creation of an interministerial council dedicated to combating crime related to artificial intelligence.

In response to the increase in crimes exploiting artificial intelligence, such as sexual exploitation through deepfakes, false advertising, and financial fraud, a council has been officially launched. It notably brings together the Commission of Communications and Media (CCM), the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Justice, the Financial Services Commission, the Fair Trade Commission, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), and the National Police Agency. During its inaugural meeting on June 26, the council reviewed a "Comprehensive Plan to Combat AI-Related Crime." This plan aims for a coordinated response covering prevention, detection, blocking, investigations, victim compensation, and recidivism prevention.

Participants also agreed on the need for an integrated and permanent response system to quickly share information and jointly analyze threats. A permanent commissioner emphasized that interministerial cooperation is crucial to prevent harm and create a safe environment for AI use, as no single entity can face these new risks alone. The combat plan will be finalized after consultation with the National AI Strategy Committee before its official publication.
