The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) of South Korea held the third plenary meeting of its "2026 Future of Personal Data Forum" to discuss the evolution of data subject rights in the future society.

The meeting, held on July 23, 2026, focused on the concept of personal data protection and new rights in the future society. A professor from Kangwon University presented data rights as "dynamic" rights whose scope must adapt to the era of artificial intelligence. Another professor from Dong-eui University addressed the relationship between online identity, notably via decentralized identifiers (DID), and data subject rights. The forum discussions covered the possible extension of these rights to include online identity, effective data control, and the protection of personal values. The PIPC chairperson emphasized the need to consider new rights for citizens and affirmed the authority's commitment to developing protection policies that concretely strengthen data subject rights against privacy threats.
