The Hungarian National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH) clarifies its position regarding the use of children's personal data for political purposes on social networks.

Following reports in the press, the authority reminds organizations and individuals using social media for political purposes to act with increased caution. It urges them to refrain from publishing minors' personal data, especially their image. The authority emphasizes that the GDPR requires special attention to the processing of children's data, as they cannot properly assess the consequences of the use of their information in a political context.

The authority specifies that the consent of a parent or legal guardian is not sufficient to lawfully use a child's image or other data for political purposes, as such practice may violate the principle of fair processing. Under Hungarian law, the NAIH can order the temporary blocking of access to a child's published personal data, a decision implemented with the cooperation of the National Media and Communications Authority. Finally, it encourages parents and guardians to exercise the rights granted to them by the GDPR.
