Deputy Prime Minister Bae Gyeong-hoon Chairs the 11th Meeting of Science and Technology Ministers to Strengthen the AI Ecosystem and Promote Technological Growth in Korea
The South Korean government presented several strategic initiatives at the 11th Meeting of Science and Technology Ministers, including a guide on privacy protection in the context of artificial intelligence (AX) transformation of the public sector.
The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) introduced a "Privacy Protection Guide for Artificial Intelligence (AX) Transformation in the Public Sector." This document aims to assist public bodies in managing issues related to the processing of personal data during AI deployment. Developed from real cases, it proposes ten essential checkpoints covering the lifecycle of AI projects, from defining the purpose and legal basis of processing to ensuring the rights of data subjects. The guide establishes a differentiated approach according to the risk level of use cases, imposing stricter checks for systems of analysis, recommendation, or automated decision-making to prevent rights violations. A dedicated support service will be set up from January 2026.
The government also adopted an "Agentic Artificial Intelligence Initiative" to regulate the development of AI capable of autonomous action. This strategy plans to establish a security and trust framework to prevent new risks, such as abuse of power by these systems. Measures include developing guidelines, creating an infrastructure for performance and reliability evaluation, and considering the identification and accountability of AI agents. The initiative also aims to promote an open ecosystem and support the development of services based on this technology, notably through the "AI for All" project.
A support plan was approved to allocate 520 government graphics processing units (GPUs) to priority AI projects. The "AI for All" project will benefit from 512 B200 GPUs to accelerate its deployment, while 8 GPUs will be dedicated to improving a "Legal Research System by AI for the General Public." Other strategies were discussed, including promoting small modular reactors, localizing semiconductor production for defense, and creating smart ports using physical AI.
