The Belgian Data Protection Authority (DPA) and the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) have jointly published a document of "Recommendations and good practices in the field of video games" to promote compliance with the GDPR in this sector.
This guide was developed to address the challenges of a sector with more than 3 billion users and using innovative technologies. It analyzes the most common data processing in video games, such as telemetry data collection or behavioral inferences for profiling and automated decision-making purposes. Based on the analysis of current video games, the document identifies risks and proposes concrete recommendations for all ecosystem actors, including developers, publishers, and service providers. The objective is to provide a practical tool adapting the GDPR to the technical language of the sector to balance compliance and innovation. The document is currently available in English, with translations planned in French and Dutch.
