The Austrian Data Protection Authority (DSB) has published information on the legal implications related to the use of connected glasses.

In view of the increasing commercialization of these devices, defined as computer-assisted glasses with integrated cameras, microphones, or screens and sometimes equipped with artificial intelligence, the authority raises several points of vigilance. The main issue concerns transparency, as the collection and processing of personal data are hardly perceptible by third parties. It is also noted that, depending on the settings chosen by the user, data may be transmitted to manufacturers or other entities who could reuse them for their own purposes, such as training AI models or marketing. The use of these devices must comply not only with the GDPR and the Austrian Data Protection Act (DSG) but also with other legal frameworks such as the right to one's image (§ 78 of the Copyright Act), the right to respect for private and family life (Article 8 of the ECHR), and personality rights (§ 16 of the General Civil Code).
